Potatoes

The humble potato was our very first crop. With experience and expertise built up over three generations, Balle Bros now offers more than 20 varieties.  We are also continuously developing and trialling new varieties. 

We grow product destined for supermarkets as well as for processing to be made into crisps and chips (Albatross, Fianna, Lady Rosetta, Ranger, and Moonlight varieties). All of our farms produce potatoes, each farm offering something a little different.

On the plate

One of New Zealand’s favourite vegetables, the potato is a trusty staple to any meal. Not only are they a great accompaniment to all meats, but you can use them to make beautiful salad meals, savoury cakes, even potato bread. Just choose the appropriate variety and the rest will follow.

Feeding body and mind

Potatoes are surprisingly rich in vitamin C. They help the body absorb minerals when eaten with other iron-rich foods. Potatoes are also excellent for satisfying hungry appetites, the sugar carbohydrates releasing energy gradually, allowing you to go longer between meals.

Really?

In the 19th century it was believed that a single acre of potatoes and the milk from just one cow was enough to feed an entire, heathy and vigorous rural Irish family, a nutritionally adequate diet.

Some of our varieties

Agria

The professional kitchens potato variety of choice.  These golden coloured potatoes make a beautiful fluffy mash, excellent chips and crisps, perfect for baking and roasting.
Delicious through and through.

Ilam Hardy

When the new season’s in, it’s the Ilam Hardy you need to look for. These white fleshed potatoes have a sweet nutty taste and great in all new season potato recipes.

Driver

Driver is a trusty member of the versatile group of potatoes. Good when boiled, yummy when mashed or baked, you can’t go too far astray when you’ve a got Driver leading your dish.

Victoria

Technically speaking you could say Victoria is the offspring of Agria, which means a lovely golden potato, available in the new season and for a limited time.

Moonlight

Moonlight potatoes are as reliable as they are tasty. Boil them and they stay firm, mash them and they fluff up, bake them with a little oil and they colour up just nicely. Versatile and easy.

Nadine

If there’s a good looking potato out there, it would have to be the Nadine. They scrub up very nicely and don’t taste so bad either. Mainly for boiling, salads but easily used in most recipes.

Draga

If you don’t want fuss then Draga is the way to go. An all-round versatile potato, the Draga will do a good job in most potato recipes.

Red Rascal

This little rascal is red, and white fleshed. Its floury texture makes for great bakers and roasters.

Marabel

The Marabel is an elegant light yellow fleshed potato with a light floury texture.  Great for baking, roasting or mashing.

Highlander

A waxy potato with a distinct nutty taste. Comes out nicely when washed. Suitable for boiling.

Van Rosa

A red skinned, white fleshed beauty, great boilers.
